Textbooks: Welcome to English (Book A) 

Focus: Time Vocab:  in the morning/afternoon/evening or at 12 o’clock.  Review: It’s, They’re, There’s, There are … (can use tic-tac-toe to refresh or ask questions … What time is it?  How many? Is there any? Are there any?  Where are they? How are they?

Activities: 

(a) Check homework – They were to write about three bad habits they have to change into good habits.  Eg.  I eat too many sweets.  I should eat more fruit.

(b) Warm-up review.  Write some times on the board in digit form (6:55 am) and a clock next to it.  Get students to come up and draw the hands correctly in the clock.  Get them to say the different ways to tell the time. Eg. It is six fifty five in the morning.  It is five to seven.  It is four thirty. It is half four in the afternoon.

(b) Book A – page 15 & 16.

(c) Extended Activity: do bingo in groups of 4

Focus: Keeping a timetable.  Review of Possessive Pronoun: my, your, his, her, our, their [on board write the personal pronouns: I, you, he, she, we, they … then they are to convert to possessive pronoun – remind that possessive pronoun describes a noun by saying who it belongs to. Can use tic-tac-toe to warm-up.] 

Activities: 

(a)  Check homework

(b)  Warm-up asking what time do you do certain things?

(c)   Book B – page 11 (get students to write what time it is numerically and spelling out)

(d)  Book B - page 12

(e)  Extended Activity: Get students to introduce a classmate by reading their letter in third person, therefore they have to change “I” to “He” or “She”. “Go” to “goes”. “Do” to “does”.  “Have” to “has”.

Focus: Pronoun : He, She, Ben + Plural Verb : eats, gets up, goes, does, …

Activities: 

(a) Check homework

(b) (c) Book D – page 11 – extended activity – write the question for each number above the first sentence.  Eg. number 1. What time do you get up? Then use those questions to ask a classmate and find out what time they do things.

(d) Book D – page 12 – students to write this for their normal school day then do one for the weekend to see how different their routine is.

Textbooks: Spin C – Health Habits

Focus:  Talking about healthy habits using adverbs.

Activities: 

(a)  Spelling Test

(b)  Introduce adverbs that tell something about an “action”. Write on board some verbs they have to change to adverbs eg. quiet – quietly, slow – slowly, loud – loudly, fast – fast, soft – softly,  etc.  Get them to act out some adverbs you call out eg. walk slowly. Walk quietly etc

(d)  Introduce adverbs that tell about “when” something is done eg. before, after, early, late. Ask different students:  When did you do your homework? Then write their answer on board: Ben did his homework before dinner. Etc.

(a) Check homework – Oxford Storyland book page 1 – 8. Sentence writing about the time you did 4 things in the weekend. Draw the time on a clock at the end of each sentence.

(b) Talk about animals and time. Which animals are more active in the morning and in the evening. (Nocturnal and Diurnal animals)

Focus: Different ways to answer the time. What is the time?  It is nine ten. It is ten past nine.  It is 9:10. When to use the words: in and at, correctly.

Activities: 

(a)  Check homework

(b)  Warm-up.  Make a date exercise.  Students are given a time on a piece of paper.  They are to ask their classmate what time it is and then invite them to join them for breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on the time.  Would you like to have …. at…. ? Ok, let’s meet at (time) in the (morning, afternoon, evening).  [Arrange a good time and place to meet.]

    1. Tell students where I live in Shanghai, street, neighbourhood, district. And where I live in my home country, NZ. Explain difference between, neighbourhood, district, town, city, country.
    2. Map out who lives closest to the school. Map out different countries, cities students come from.
    3. Students to complete pages 7 – 10 in Welcome to English textbook.

  1. Introduce students to names of different jobs. First get students to call out jobs they know or would like to do. Give them worksheet to write down the different jobs they see. Also look at page 58 & 59 of teachers book of jobs. Write the job and where they work. Eg. He’s a doctor. He works in a hospital. She’s a teacher. She works in a university.
  2. Welcome to English book – page 19 & 20 (21 & 22).
  3. Using: He’s a … , She’s a ….. , Tim’s mother is a … etc

  4. Talk about why we have signs and rules. Write sentences about some eg. Why don’t we make a noise near the birds. Because we don’t want to frighten them. We don’t litter because we want to keep the place clean for everyone and so animals don’t get trapped too. Etc.

  2. Warm up – introduce the vocab to talk about the five senses: looks, sounds, smells, tastes, feels – Spin C – page 53
  3. Build up vocab for describing sound and sight … by referring to things around us in the classroom. Speaking and writing it down.

Homework: Make your own sound from things you can find at home. Eg. sticky tape, fork and knife etc. Bring in next day to share your new sound with the class. Class will close their eyes and guess what the noise is made from and describe how it sounds.

  1. Perform homework task
  2. Build up vocab for describing smell & taste – using food given from teachers book – page 18 – 23. Students given a piece of food to describe to class – who have to guess what it is.
  3. Teacher will bring in some smells – students to close eyes to see if can guess the smell without looking at it.

Homework: Bring in something from home that classmates to guess what it is only by touching it with eyes closed. Prepare for spelling test
